The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines aging in place as "the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level."
What is an Aging-in-Place-Specialist?
The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place.
There are many ways to build to accommodate aging in place needs, to ensure that your home is a place where you can live safely and comfortably no matter your current or future ability. Modifications that allow for wheelchair and walker use such as minimal thresholds and ramps instead of stairs are common features of aging in place building. Bathrooms can be renovated to include curbless showers, walk-in bathtubs, grasp bars, and lower vanities suited for wheelchair/seated use. Light switches and electrical outlets can be located in accessible locations that don't require reaching or bending. Larger handles on cabinets, drawers, and appliances can help individuals with limited dexterity. Brighter lighting can provide higher definition in areas where transitions might be more difficult to negotiate with lower illumination. All of these modifications are designed to keep you comfortable and safe in your home for more of your lifetime.
